For the 2021-2022 season, our meets will not be at the Midway Village Museum. We have changed the location to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1829 N. Rockton Ave, Rockford, IL across from West Middle School (Map). Enter the south entrance from the parking lot and take the stairs or elevator to the basement.

 

September 12, 2021

Time: 1-3 PM

Meet Location: Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Admission is free to NMRA members. Non-members $5.00.

Clinic: My Journey to Master Model Railroader - Gary Loiselle, RRVD Achievement Program Chairman, will take us on his quest to earn Maser Model Railroader #681.  He will tell you how he did it and why you should, too.

Clinic: Adventures in 3d Printing - Ken Mosny will describe the process of DLP 3D printing at home including an actual demonstration of the 3D printer.  Hobby 3D printing has dramatically dropped in cost making it practical for you to do yourself.

Contest: Diesel Locomotives - Bring your favorite model of an infernal combustion diesel locomotive.

Layout Tour: Joy Jurs' large scale outdoor garden layout. Relax in the sunshine and enjoy the trains.

 

September 16-19, 2021 Midwest Region 2021 NMRA Convention

The Midwest Region Convention scheduled for Rockford this year has been cancelled.  While we anticipated that sufficient degree of normal social interaction would resume by fall, the persistent uncertainty of COVID restrictions regarding attendance limits and lack of commitment of venues to the event has regrettably forced us to cancel the 2021 175th celebration of the Rockford Railroad Convention.  We will all see you at Indianapolis in 2022!

October 2-3, 2021 Cherryvale Mall Train Show

Time: Mall hours Saturday 11-8, Sunday 12-6

It has been a long dry spell without a train show to go to. Come the Cherryvale Mall for door prizes, operating layouts, displays and vendors selling railroad wares. Admission is free.

 

October 10, 2021 Meet

Time: 1-3 PM

Meet Location: Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Admission is free to NMRA members. Non-members $5.00

Clinic: Adventures in 3D Printing, Part 2 - Ken Mosny will go in depth with the kinds of equipment and software you need to set up you own 3D printing shop at home.

Railroad video - Ron Johnson will present a short video on a railroad topic.

Contest: Residential structures - Bring a model of a house, garage, or anything residential. If it is a business, commercial or railroad structure, it does not qualify. No dioramas, please.

Layout Tour: Robbie Kapala's N scale BNSF sub is open for business. You saw it virtually last year and now it is live.

 

November 14, 2021 Meet (New Date)

Time: 1-3 PM

Meet Location: Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Admission is free to NMRA members. Non-members $5.00

Annual Midwest Region Membership Meeting: The RRVD will host the annual Midwest Region membership meeting which has been delayed because of COVID restrictions.  All NMRA members are encourage to attend.  After the meeting, nonmembers are welcome for the rest of the meet activities.  The annual meeting will be a the beginning of the meet and usually only takes 15-20 minutes.

Clinic: Understanding how stuff is made, how the railroad supports that with car placement, just in time deliveries, modeling industries and operations - Rick Mahaney will describe industry design and operations; how products are made and assembled involving solids, liquids and gases; railroad operation to support industries with parts and shipping; and "just in time" operations.  Model railroaders need to do research into the industries and products they want to model, it is not just enough to just place some buildings on a siding on your layout.

Clinic:  Intermodal 101 For Model Railroaders - Rich Mahaney will look at intermodal operations, intermodal box and tank containers, truck trailers, intermodal facilities, intermodal and truck trailer equipment and transferring the prototype to the model railroad.  Rich is also working on a quick overview of tank cars for that day also, or will work it into presentation number one.

Contest: Passenger Cars - Any car model regularly used in passenger service qualifies including passenger, baggage, express, and business cars.

Layout Tour: Gene Wheeler will show off his HO version of the Chicago and Northwestern.

 

December 5, 2021 Meet

Time: 1-3 PM

Meet Location: Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Admission is free to NMRA members. Non-members $5.00

Clinic:  An evolutionary tale: Toy train to model railroad or "What you should know before you come to visit." - Gary Loiselle will talk about how he transformed himself from an ordinary, rational person into the model railroader he is today.

Contest: Steam Locomotives - To me, all diesels look the same, but if it snorted steam, that's a different story. Bring a model of your favorite steam locomotive.

Layout Tour: We will visit Gary Loiselle's Overland Short Haul & Industrial Transfer railroad.

 

January 2, 2022 Meet

Time: 1-3 PM

Meet Location: Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Admission is free to NMRA members. Non-members $5.00

Clinic: Arduino animation and billboards on your layout.  Dave Ackmann, from St. Louis, Missouri, will present two clinics via Zoom. You will see his clinic live on our screen in the church. You will be able to ask questions and make comments and hear Dave's responses.

Contest: Winter Railroading - We will have two categories. One will be for individual models of railroad winter equipment like snowplows or flangers, for example. The other category will be for complete winter scenes with a railroad theme.

Layout Tour: No layout tour this month.  Come to the RRVD Holiday Dinner instead!

 

January 2. 2022 RRVD Holiday Dinner
Come to the RRVD Holiday Dinner at Lino's.  As a benefit of membership, dinner is free to RRVD members, guests and non-members are $30.00 for a six course dinner and an evening of fellowship.  Reservations are required.  Click here for reservation details.

 

February 6, 2022 Meet

Time: 1-3 PM

Meet Location: Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Admission is free to NMRA members. Non-members $5.00

Clinic: This month we will have a "round robin" of four short 20 minute or so clinics for hands on participation by you. Each clinic will be given four times so you can participate in all of them.

  1. Ken Peterson will present a hands on clinic using home built static grass applicators and we can all share our experiences using them. If you have an applicator of your own, either commercial or home built, bring it.
  2. Ken Mosny will present a hands on clinic on soldering rail including how to use and clean acid based fluxes which are effective with painted and dirty rail for repairing old trackwork. If you have a soldering iron, a 30-40 watt pencil iron is best, bring what you use, and you can practice with it.
  3. Marty Hendrickx will present hands on clinic on tuning up cars for optimal performance including coupler heights, weights, and wheels.

Contest: Maintenance of Way Equipment - Cranes to bunk cars and anything in between is OK.. If it is a piece of rolling stock used for maintenance and not lettered for revenue service, bring it.

Layout Tour: State-Line  "S" Gaugers"  Come see one of most practical other scales around.

 

March 6, 2022 Meet

Time: 1-3 PM

Meet Location: Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Admission is free to NMRA members. Non-members $5.00

Clinic: TBD

Contest: Boxcars - Railroads loved the universal boxcar because they could haul almost anything solid in it from coal to hides to automobiles. Bring a model of your favorite one.

March 26-27th Rock River Valley Train Show

Sunday March 27, 10-3

Rock River Valley Train Show will be at Harlem High School, 9229 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, IL  We're back in a new, larger venue with over 42,000 square feet for our 30th annual show of model railroad vendors, displays and operating layouts.  Plenty of new and used model railroad supplies for sale, informative displays, door prizes and fun to watch operating model trains for children of all ages will be there.  Admission is still only $5.00 for adults with kids 12 and under free.  Parking is free, too.  Where else can you bring the whole family for just $10.00?   Vendors and exhibitors can contact Ken Mosny registrar@rrvd-nmra.com or 815-965-4871.  For more information go to the train show page by clicking here.
