2016-2017 RRVD Schedule

Unless otherwise stated, RRVD meets are held in the Lakeview Room at the Midway Village Museum Center. Midway Village is located at 6799 Guilford Road, just west of Perryville road in Rockford, IL. The doors open at about 12:30 PM and the meets start at 1:00 PM.

September 11, 2016
Event: “Show and tell” by various members presenting what railroad activities they did on vacation this summer. If anyone has an interesting railroad subject from their summer activities, contact Ray Dyreson at raydyr@aol.com and he will be glad to fit you in.
Contest: Enclosed freight cars of any era. These can be boxcars, covered hopper cars, cattle cars and even tank cars. No open loads. If you can see the cargo, it is not eligible.

October 2, 2016
Clinic: Their will be two presentations. The first will be by Ed Rosengren of the Illinois Railway Museum who will update the group about what is happening at the museum including recent and future restoration, long range plans for equipment procurement and general campus development. The second presentation will be by Jim McQueeny who uses paper towels and paint to make scenery landforms.
Contest: This is a special contest to create a diorama of a railroad scene. The diorama should not be much bigger than 12” x 12”. The purpose of the contest is to build scenes which will be displayed at local public libraries during November which is National Model Railroad Month. Jay places them in various libraries and moves them to different libraries throughout the month. It would be advantageous to accompany the display with a short description explaining what is being shown and possibly how it was built. We all want to bring others into the model railroading fold and now is your chance to do so.

Clinic: Has two presentations. The first will be by Dennis Blunt on his card operating system used to run his model railroad. The second will be by Ken Mosny. Ken states that he is deciding which one of his to present so we will await his mystery presentation. As always I am sure it will be well done.
Contest: Industrial buildings of all types from large to small shops. They do not have to be serviced by a railroad but can be non-rail serviced industry or shop.

Clinic: Jay Kabitzke will give a clinic on modeling realistic rocks and Gary Loiselle will address scenery for the artistically challenged.
Contest: Passenger equipment mail, baggage, coaches, sleepers dining cars, heater cars, express cars etc.

February 5, 2017
Clinic: Ken Mosny's clinic is titled "Bits & Pieces - a potpouri of modeling techniques". The other clinic is a continuation from January by Jay Kabitzki about the Milwaukee Railroad West.
Contest:
Open loads.

March 12, 2017
Clinic: Joe Whinnery will talk about getting your layout featured in a magazine and Aubrey Olson discuses Midwest short line railroads.
Contest: Freight and Passenger depots and stations.

March 25-26, 2017 Annual Show and Sale
To be held at Jefferson High School (4145 Samuelson Road Rockford, IL) on Saturday March 25 and Sunday March 26. Show hours are 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday and 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Sunday. Entrance fee $5.00, children 12 years and younger free. Military personnel in uniform and scouts in uniform free. Many train layouts on display along with informative exhibits on various facets on the model railroading hobby. Door prizes offered throughout the two days of the show. Numerous vendors will be present selling both new and used model train equipment as well a railroad memorabilia. Food will be available with proceeds going to the Jefferson High Booster Group.

Clinic: Gary Loiselle will present "Gondola Open Loads". Scott Matejka and Dan Weber of Midwest Rail Junction will present "Adding a DCC decoder to a DC locomotive".
Contest:
Maintenance and non-revenue equipment, snow plows, flangers, wreckers, weed sprayers, ballast cars, scale cars, cabooses, etc.

May 7, 2017
Event: Joint meet held with SCWD in Rockford.
Clinic: Jim McQueeny will give an overview of the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad for those who were born too late. Second clinic is Clarence Welte - Behind the scenes stories, pictures and videos of the Illinois Railway Museum including three major movies made there.
Contest: Motive power, steam and diesel.
Photo Contest: of motive power both prototype or model. Pictures are to be no bigger than 5 x 7 and no more than two per contestant. You can enter four: two prototype and two model.
